FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: FAQ

CAN ANYONE BE A FIREFIGHTER? WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

Absolutely. We're ordinary people striving to be extraordinary. Many of us have full-time jobs and families. Anyone in Hartford, Illinois, or the surrounding communities is encouraged to become a member.

No experience is necessary. To become a firefighter, you must be 18 years of age and have a valid drivers license.

Staffing levels are lowest during the weekday. Those with flexible work schedules, students, and others that are available to run calls during these hours are strongly encouraged to apply.

IS IT VOLUNTEER? HOW MUCH COMMITMENT IS EXPECTED?

Hartford is a paid-on-call department meaning you will receive monetary compensation for every call you respond to. We ask you strive to respond to as many calls and trainings as you are able, but generally expect a response to at least 20% of our calls each year. We also ask that you participate in community functions such as parades, events, and fundraisers.

If you provide the dedication, we will provide the training at no cost to you. While not required, recruits are encouraged to attend classes to obtain Firefighter Basic certification to further hone their skills.

WHERE DO I SIGN UP? WHAT IS THE PROCESS LIKE?

Please submit your information here. We will get back with you shortly.

The process to join can take a few months to complete so don't get discouraged. It generally consists of an interview, background check, drug test, and a physical.

We could not function without the support of our families and communities. If a member of your family is interested in becoming a firefighter, do your best to support them!
